May marks our last formal event of the year.  All are invited to attend a screening and speaker-led discussion of The Forgotten Refugees on Sunday, May 18th at 10 AM .  This 49-minute award-winning documentary, produced by The David Project, offers a rare glimpse into a little known chapter of history.  For over 500 years, large Jewish communities inhabited the Middle East and North Africa .  Through personal interviews and archival footage, The Forgotten Refugees details the mass exodus of (Mizrahi) Jews from Arab countries and Iran in the 20th century.  This is truly a fascinating and thought-provoking film.  Please use our convenient, online registration below.  Although this program is geared for adults, college-aged and older high school students are also welcome.  There is no cost for members; non-members should call the temple office at 978-443-2082 to sign up and may pay their $5 fee at the door.

Shabbat and Brown Bag Torah Study are both going strong, and the B’nai Torah Book Club has already held three meetings.  Both Torah Study groups, led by Rabbi Heilman offer an opportunity to delve into the meaning of Torah, line-by-line and word-by-word.  The full schedule is available below.  The Book Club meets at least three times per year to discuss a contemporary work.  (See below for information about the next meeting.)  We guarantee a lively and interesting discussion.  All three groups are open (and free) to all!  Registration is NOT necessary.

B’nai Torah Book Club

Our book club has already read The Yiddish Policemen’s Union by Michael Chabon, The Ministry of Special Cases, written by Nathan Englander, and People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks so far this year. The discussions were lively and provided the opportunity for varying points of view and perspectives.  If you haven’t yet read any of these, you may want to make the time for these novels that discuss what happens when Jewish communities fall apart and difficult personal decisions need to be made.

Our final book club selection will be The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak.

The Book Thief
Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul. (Barnes and Noble synopsis)

The date for discussing The Book Thief is scheduled for June 1, 2008 at 10:00 am in the B’nai Torah library. Hope to see you then.

** ONGOING **

Brown Bag Torah Study, a weekly session in which the weekly Torah portion (Parashat Hashavua) will be studied, meets on Tuesdays at Noon.  Students will become familiar with the ongoing unfolding of the Torah's story lines, major themes, concepts and commandments.  No previous experience in Torah Study is necessary.  This class is open to the entire community, members of Congregation B'nai Torah as well as non-members, Jews as well as non-Jews.  Come share in the simple pleasures of food, camaraderie and ongoing learning as we explore the wisdom and insight that the Torah has to offer to our own, often too-complex, lives.  Bring your own lunch; the Rabbi will provide coffee and tea.  This is a great option for those whose schedules allow for a weekday learning session.
