B'nai Torah's Softball Season

We're undefeated this season!

The B'nai Torah men's softball team continued its undefeated season in Week 5, defeating Temple Emanuel of Newton 21-13 in the scorching Sunday heat.  The Hit Men bats were equally scorching, driving in 9 runs in the first inning to set the tone for the contest. The offense continued for all 7 innings, and we closed out the contest with solid pitching from our staff of hurlers, now 3 deep.  Nine of our hitters are batting .500 or better, with the offense very evenly distributed across the lineup.  Our defense consist of highlight-reel catches and cringeworthy bloopers -- but no one has gotten hurt!

We finally return home after 4 weeks on the road, playing our next game at our home field at Featherland Park in Sudbury on Sunday, June 13 at 10am.  Tickets are still available (just kidding) and we welcome any and all fans to come and support the troops!

After much research and debate, and the advice and experience of health professionals, the Mens Shul Softball League started its 2021 season after cancelling the entire 2020 schedule. About 70% of the players from the 40+ teams from the Greater Boston area wanted to start the season under the March COVID rules, so the league reconfigured teams, schedules, and rules so that the men 25 years and older could continue their Sunday morning pursuits of lost childhoods and dramatic game-winning home runs.

Ten of the B'nai Torah-rostered players elected to play, which was just under the minimum required to field a team in the league.  So our squad was merged with the four members of Temple Isaiah of Lexington that wanted to play.  We were able to hold one practice and an introduction to our new players, before the season quickly opened on May 2. Playing as "The B'nai Torah Hitmen", we immediately had our "Bereshit" moment -- "In The Big-Inning" (sorry!), scoring 8 runs in the first inning, and we haven't stopped our winning ways. With victories over Temple Israel/Temple Sinai of Sharon, Temple Emmanuel of Newton, and Temple Aliyah/Beth Shalom of Needham, we are undefeated and in sole possession of first place in our AAA Division.

The team possesses a combination of youth (3 sons or grandsons of members), experience (most of us are old!), and pluck. We've enjoyed meeting our teammates this year from nearby Lexington, and it's brightened up Sunday mornings for our COVID-weary souls.  We'd love to have our large and enthusiastic fan base continue to follow the team.  We only have two home games left: Sunday June 13 at 10am, and Sunday, June 27 at 10am. Both games are at Featherland Field in Sudbury. Please come support our effort, and enjoy the kibbitzing as well.  And it wouldn't hurt if you bring an extra ice pack for a couple of us.
