October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and, as in past years, we are marking this important time at our Friday evening service on October 30 beginning at 7:00 pm.

Our guest speaker for this Domestic Violence Awareness Shabbat will be Julie Youdovin, who is the Outreach and Program Coordinator for "Journey to Safety" - the domestic abuse program of Jewish Family & Children Service.

The pandemic poses a challenge to our mental, spiritual and physical health. So many people feel isolated and lonely as they try to make their way through this global pandemic. We have evidence that survivors of domestic abuse are struggling to an even greater degree than before, as individuals and families spend more time at home, as abusers and survivors are forced into closer quarters with one another, as needs of children continue to change and increase, and as there is overall less contact with friends, extended family, neighbors and colleagues.

How do we provide an extra measure of support to those who may be vulnerable to domestic abuse? How do we learn to listen to the silent cries for help for those who may not be able to ask for it?

The topic of Julie's talk will be "Lifting our Eyes: How to Protect Ourselves and Others in this Time of COVID-19." Julie will share with us some specific thoughts as to the unique sensitivities related to survivors of domestic abuse during this difficult time; moreover, she will also address how each of us can strive to make this time a little healthier, sweeter and more productive for ourselves and for those whom we care.

This Shabbat is supported by the Social Action Committee of Congregation B'nai Torah and by the Sudbury, Wayland, Lincoln Domestic Roundtable.
